Agni Varsha is an unusual period drama set in the pre-Mahabharat era. A village is in the throes of agony, as they face drought year after year. Ten years have passed by and it is decided that a yagna should be performed to appease Indra (Amitabh Bachchan), the God of Rain. Paravasu (Jackie Shroff) is made the mahapurohit for the yagna. This makes both his cousin Yavakri (Nagarjuna) and father Rishi Raibhya (Mohan Agashe) jealous. Both want to take revenge against him. The opportunity comes when Paravasu abandons his family to devote seven years of his life to the yagna. This leaves his wife, Vishaka (Raveena Tandon) extremely lonely and vulnerable to the schemes of Yavakri and her father-in-law Rishi Raibhya. Yavakri seduces Vishaka to distract Paravasu from his yagna. When Raibhya finds out about Yavakri's plan, he invokes a demon, Rakshasa (Prabhudeva) to kill him. In this battle of the wits, Vishaka manages to turn the tables on them. In the meantime Paravasu's younger brother, Arvasm (Milind Soman) falls in love with a tribal girl Nittilai (Sonali Kulkarni). He's prepared to risk the wrath of society by marrying outside his Brahmin caste. This love story is instrumental in bringing salvation to the land.
